Turning over the leaf

Worrying, rather than dealing with fear, makes the emotion grow totally out of worried proportion. Many women spend their whole pregnancy worrying about what will go wrong. That is a waste of energy…Instead, use these nine months to develop physically, mentally and emotionally for your soon to be baby.

Learning to recognize, admit and face your feelings will make your pregnancy a more positive experience.

The positive experience of sharing time and feelings with other pregnant women seems to help allay fears. Join us at classes this month as we tackle the issue of fear of labor and delivery!

Here is a simple exercise that can be helpful in dealing with your fears once you have pinpointed them. This mental exercise is called:

Turn over The Leaf:

Imagine that each of your fears is a leaf with two very different sides

One side is faith

The other side is fear

Side 1: FEAR

This side reads: “I will never be able to make it through labor and delivery”.

“I will not be able to take care of the baby once it arrives.”

“I will not be able to cope with all the new responsibilities”

Side 2: FAITH

The other side reads “I will have the inner strength and help I need to have a good birth experience.”

“I’m going to educate myself by reading books and talking to other new mothers. I may not have all the answers, but I will do the best I can”

“I have faith in myself and I know I can do a good job. I will get help when I need it.”

Whenever your head is filled with fears about the baby or your new motherhood role, you have to remember to turn over the leaf.

You can make yourself a reminder of this by pressing a leaf from outside between waxed paper (iron together on a very low setting). Then hang the leaf in a place you pass frequently. A reminder to keep the faith…and the power of positive thinking!

…Turn over the leaf….Have faith in yourself and your body!
