Fourth trimester…you mean there is more?!


When you bring your soft, sweet,  dimpled newborn home from the hospital, you may think your nursery is a peaceful sanctuary….

To him, it may be a disorienting world… part Las Vegas casino, part dark quiet cave.

Did you know that In utero, a baby is accustomed to a whooshing sound that is louder than a vacuum …So when we put the baby in a quiet room at birth and tiptoe around, it’s like sensory deprivation.

To help calm him it can be helpful to think of his first three months as the fourth trimester.

In the Program Happiest Baby on the block, Dr. Harvey Karp recommends a series of five steps designed to imitate the uterus that can help calm and soothe a newborn…and even gain a bit more sleep for the parents!

The two most important parenting skills for new parents are learning how to successfully feed their baby and calm them when they are crying.

Confidence and bonding are built by learning these skills.
