Sneaking snacks…

Pregnancy is the perfect time to really think about your nutrition more than before. In previous years, we’ve told women that they were eating for two. This lead to many women consuming way too many calories, not to mention lots of junk food. This put a strain on their health and that of their babies.

Now research has shown that pregnant moms need about 1 extra snack per day to help grow a healthy baby. That works out to about 300 extra calories per day. The hard part is deciding how to spend those calories every day. Obviously they can be used to eat a candy bar or…WAY better for you and your growing baby… choose snacks that pack a nutritional punch.

Protein is a perfect choice for a snack because it is the building block for every cell. It also helps many moms when they are feeling fatigued or even nauseated.  Here are some of my favorite snack combinations:

  • Crackers and cheese. This is a great way to get some protein and fiber. Try  lots of different wholegrain   crackers, even trying some of the newer version of old favorites that have less fat. 2% and low fat cheeses are a great choice! Just remember that you want your cheese to say “Pasteurized” on it.
  • Nuts. A bag full of nuts is always handy to have around and it does not require preparation or refrigeration. Consider bringing some roasted almonds to your next appointment. A healthy snack while you wait! These are great protein powerhouses.
  • Fresh fruit. Every morning you could grab an extra piece of fruit for your desk. An apple, banana or orange requires very little thought or preparation. I am fond of the Clementine oranges.  Yogurt is another great snack with protein…it also has some great live cultures that keep your digestive system on track!.
  • Hard boiled eggs. These are compact snacks to carry with you, but do require a fridge. If you like these, they can be an easy way to increase your protein. Some moms I know also swear by their ability to quell morning sickness.
  • Dips and sticks. Carrot sticks and celery are great. But today we often use broccoli and other veggies with dips. Try bean dips, humus and other fun sauces on your vegetables

Remember to incorporate the powerhouse of protein as a healthy pregnancy snack!

Swim baby swim…..

Swimming is a GREAT thing to do when you are pregnant!

It is considered safe in pregnancy, and It can be the perfect combination of aerobics and relaxation. You can either swim as you normally would exercise or try something new like an organized water aerobics course.

The only reasons that swimming would not be an acceptable exercise are:

  • If your Doctor or midwife told you not to exercise
  • If your water has broken.

**It should be noted that diving from the high dive is generally not advised**

Swimming is enjoyed by many pregnant women,and…Hey…We live in Florida, and can practically do it year round!

Most pregnant mama’s love it for  the feeling of weightlessness in the water. Just like your baby is “ swimming”inside of you! This is particularly true in the last few months.

This can also make aerobic exercise safer than on dry land because the water provides more cushion for your joints which are under a bit of stress from the hormones of pregnancy.

After you’ve done your work out, consider spending an extra few minutes working on your relaxation. Try floating on your back and just clearing your mind. Imagine your baby floating in his or her own swimming pool.

Cat’s and pregnancy?

Dear Christopher Cat:

I am pregnant, and worried that I may need to give away my cat. I’m concerned she’ll transmit toxo-plasma, and that it will harm my unborn child.

I adore my cat and can’t bear the thought of giving her away. Is there any safe way for me to keep her?

Christopher Responds:

Yes. Avoiding toxoplasma gondii, a micro-scopic protozoan, is relatively simple.

Even so, your  concern is justified, because a woman first exposed to toxoplasma during pregnancy can give birth to a child who develops seizures, mental retardation, blindness or other ailments.

Toxoplasmosis isn’t a problem for us cats, because we’re naturally superior. Even though we may become infected when we eat diseased prey, we don’t get sick.

However, for a couple weeks after our initial infection, we excrete toxoplasma in our feces.

Humans can inadvertently ingest the organism, for example, while cleaning litter boxes or gardening.

Toxoplasma also lives in animal tissue, and it’s even more common for people to ingest the organism when they eat raw or undercooked meat or drink unpasteurized milk.

Thirty to 50 percent of women have antibodies that protect their un-born children. Your obstetrician can advise you about a blood test.

Pregnant women, especially those without antibodies, should ob-serve these precautions:

Cook meat thoroughly. Scrub hands, utensils and surfaces that contact raw meat.

• Wash your hands after gardening, and wash produce before you eat it.

• Keep your cat indoors, and don’t let her eat rodents, birds or raw meat.

• Have another adult empty the litter box. If that’s not possible, wear a surgical mask and gloves, and wash your hands afterward. Scoop daily, because toxoplasma isn’t infectious until more than one day after excretion.

• Cover children’s sandboxes so cats can’t use them as outdoor litter boxes.

Another step on the road to a healthy pregnancy…

Dental health during pregnancy isn’t a glamorous topic, but it’s an important one. There are  some misconceptions and misinformation about dental health during pregnancy…lets sink our teeth into this ;)…

Did you know?

  • When you are pregnant…there is more acidity in your crazy-teeth-pacifier1mouth, which can increase the risk of tooth decay. Vomiting during pregnancy can make the problem worse by exposing your teeth to more stomach acids.
  • Those wonderful hormones that we talk about…that keep the baby growing, and you healthy, unfortunately can also affect the ligaments and bones that support the teeth…possibly causing teeth to loosen during pregnancy.
  • Those same hormonal changes can lead to gingivitis…inflamation of the gums. Left untreated…gum disease can affect the health of your baby, very seriously.

So what can I do to keep my teeth and gums healthy during pregnancy?

  • Ideally, schedule a dental exam before pregnancy to treat any dental problems ahead of time. But when you find out you are pregnant…Go to the dentist for an evaluation and teeth cleaning. Also visit your dentist regularly during pregnancy — especially if you develop a dental problem. Your doctor or midwife will happily give you a note to give the dentist permission to do that assessment.  Treasure Coast Community Health Dental clinic (info below)… and perhaps other dentists will accept Medicaid for the visleaving_my_toothbrush_at_your_aptits.

 

  • Stick to the basics. Use a soft bristled toothbrush. Floss regularly. Rinse with  a fluoride mouthwash. If you have morning sickness, rinse your mouth with a solution of baking soda and water after vomiting. Mix one teaspoon baking soda in one cup water.

 

  • d7ce07a9d9a2d726 Chew gum that contains xylitol…(trident, orbit.) Xylitol is a sugar substitute that has been found to decrease the incidence of cavities! Remember…chewing a mint flavored sugarless gum can also help some women combat pregnancy nausea as well.

 

These are simple but SUCH important steps you should take to keeping your baby and body healthy during this pregnancy. Protect yourselves….You are soooo worth it

Increasing your water intake….

Drinking water is always important for your health, but when you’re pregnant, it’s even more essential! To make sure you drink enough each day (anywhere from 64 to 100 ounces a day), try these recommendations:

Designated Water Bottle with Straw I tend to drink a lot more water when I have a reusable bottle handy that has a straw. For the simple reason that I don’t have to drop what I’m doing to unscrew a cap, I’m much more likely to take a sip if my water bottle has a straw. I can pick up the bottle, flip back the straw, drink, and set the bottle back down, all with one hand. It’s so easy, I don’t even think about it. I keep the bottle close by throughout the day, and I always end up refilling the bottle multiple times.

Set a Timer If you tend to get wrapped up in work or projects like I do, you might go hours without drinking until you are finally so thirsty that you cannot concentrate. When I used to work in an office, I fought this cycle by setting a timer in my calendar program to alert me every hour to drink one 8 ounce glass. One glass each hour throughout the workday fulfilled my goal of drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day. My coworkers thought it was hilarious, but I felt great so I didn’t care. Eventually I no longer needed the timer; I automatically would drink every time I noticed the n2_bottles_waterew hour.

Pre-fill Your Water Bottles If you have a hard time keeping track of how much you’ve been drinking throughout the day and you’re determined to reach your goal, begin each morning by filling up enough water bottles to equal the number of ounces you want to drink. For example, you could fill two 32oz  water bottles and keep sipping throughout the day until they are both empty.

Add Some Flavor If the taste of water is what is keeping you from drinking enough, flavor it! The beverage section of your grocery store has tons of options for flavoring water. You can turn it into lemonade or tea, for example. Add slices of fresh orange or lemon…or try raspberries!
